Traffic Violations
Moving Violations in Virginia
When you are convicted of a traffic violation in Virginia, the court notifies the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). According to the Virginia DMV, the following will occur:
- The conviction will be posted to your driving record
- You will be assigned demerit points depending on the offense
- You may be issued an order of suspension
- You may be ordered to successfully complete a driver improvement program
Insurance Discounts
You could qualify for an insurance discount upon successful completion of a computer-based Virginia driver improvement clinic. The Virginia DMV states that insurance companies may offer a discount to policy holders that complete a driver improvement clinic.
If you take a driver improvement course to reduce your insurance premiums, the DMV will not allow you to receive safe driving points. You may also not receive a discount if you were court-ordered to take the course. Please check with your insurance provider to see if they will give you a discount.
Safe Driving Points
By successfully completing this program, you will be eligible for 5 safe driving points. Please note that the DMV will allow you to accumulate no more than 5 safe driving points in a 24 month period for completion of a driver improvement clinic.
